Volunteering at Sandpoint Teen Center

WELCOME TO SANDPOINT TEEN CENTER (STC),

   

 

As a teen center we work hard to attract new volunteers and are keen to ensure all volunteers receive a positive experience and always feel welcomed and valued.

Below is a summary of our volunteer opportunities.  Please complete the Volunteer Application to let us know your passions.  (any one of these positions may be coupled together)

Operations Assistant-

  • Arrive for staff check in

  • Unstructured time-mingling with teens, learning names, working on projects such as a puzzle, art project, something that you like doing that allows you to be present around the students while not asking anything of them. Invite questions and allow students to “help” or try it out. It is important that there are no expectations from STC personnel at this time beyond the basic agreement of respect. 

  • Meal time: support teen body during announcements, check-in, sign up for Afternoon Choice. Visit with teens during meal. Assist with clean up or transition to Programs. Help OM as needed.

  • Program Choice: assist with one of the following 

 

  • Indoor/Outdoor exercise

  • Homework Help

  • Literacy Program -book group

  • Scheduled activities such as bowling, volunteer projects in the community, etc.

  • Various class trade enrichment

  • Job skill development: resume preparation, job applications, mock interviews, support for actual interview if appropriate

  • Help teens with clean up and sign out

  • Provide input at staff debrief

 

Literacy-

  • Research and recommend book purchases to the board.

  • Purchase approved books.

  • Help teens select a book, track their progress, hear their report, give feedback, provide the $ if satisfactory.

  • Develop guidelines for successful completion of book reading/report. 

  • Coordinate with the Youth Outreach contact at the East Bonner County Library for book recommendations, and reading plan support

   

Activities-

  • Schedule projects and activities.

  • Prep projects and crafts for Unstructured Time.

  • Host community members who come to teach activities

   

Exercise-

Potentially an outdoor activity, snow removal, raking leaves, etc

 

Community Assistance-

  • Curate volunteer opportunities in the community for STC participants.

  • Match participants with opportunities.

  • Serve alongside participants to ensure quality service.

  • Mentor participants while serving

 

Job Skills-

  • Oversee certificate programs.

  • Maintain community contacts to ensure access to quality teachers.

  • Assist with resumes, mock interviews, and cultivate potential job placements in the community.

   

Homework Help-

  • Help teens that sign up for homework help stay engaged and to use study habits that work for them.

  • Help with questions; including help with research answers as needed.

 

Tech Center-

  • Manage and update computers.

  • Implement usage policies.

  • Coordinate with Executive Administrator to host classes taught by qualified community members.

  • Provide a schedule of classes every month. 

 

Check in/out and Database-

  • Track attendance.

  • Be the 1st contact for visitors and teens.

  • Answer phone

  • Manage ongoing small projects. 

 

Administrative-

  • Tech Support: help with website questions, learning new software, diagnosing and updating computers for use in the office or tech lab

  • Writer:  interview participants, staff, volunteers, donors, board members, web content creation, email newsletters, annual mailings, thank you letter prep

  • Donor Management: maintain email and mail lists, track communication with donors, provide reports to the EA on the status of the annual communication plan

  • Staff Support: Provide training to staff on youth relationship building, mentoring youth, best practices in youth programs

  • Auditing Services for our annual operating budget

  • Grant writing-help GW with grant writing activities.

Fundraising-

  • Working with the board and EA, plan fundraising events, coordinate and help on the day of events

  • Media campaign for event publicity-radio, newspaper, Sandpoint online, video creation and you tube postings

  • Provide education to the board and staff regarding fundraising methods and best practices.
